Maurizio Pollini is a world-renowned pianist born on January 5, 1942, in Milan, Italy. His father, Gino Pollini, was a modern architect, and he grew up in a family environment rich in art and culture. Pollini began learning the piano at the age of five, studying under Carlo Lonahti and Carlo Bidusso. He graduated from the Milan Conservatory in 1959 and gained international attention the following year, 1960, by winning the 6th International Chopin Piano Competition in Warsaw. Artur Rubinstein, who was a judge at the time, was also impressed by his outstanding performance skills.
After winning the competition, Pollini did not immediately devote himself solely to performing, but spent time expanding his musical depth and repertoire. Later, he developed his musical world under the guidance of the Italian pianist Arturo Benedetti Michelangeli.
Pollini deeply explored not only Chopin's ballads, nocturnes, polonaises, etudes, and piano sonatas, but also the complete 32 piano sonatas of Beethoven, Brahms' piano concertos, and the works of Schumann and Debussy. He also showed interest in 20th-century contemporary music, such as Schoenberg, Webern, Boulez, and Stockhausen.
In 1972, he released his first album with Deutsche Grammophon and has collaborated closely with this label for over 50 years since then. He performed and recorded the complete Beethoven piano concertos with Claudio Abbado and the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra, and left live recordings of the complete concertos in 1992–1993. The project to record the complete Beethoven piano sonatas, which began in 1977, was completed in 2014.
At the 1995 Salzburg Festival, he presented 'Progetto Pollini,' which introduced both classical and contemporary music. He believed that music should not remain a legacy of the past but should also hold meaning for the lives of modern people and society. In the 1970s, he also participated in concerts for workers and students.
Pollini married the Italian pianist Marilisa in 1968. He is known for his tendency to focus on music and art rather than revealing his private life excessively. Furthermore, there were several general rehearsals ahead of his performance in Korea, but due to a recurrence of acute bronchitis, consecutive cancellations occurred. Ultimately, without being able to hold the performance in Korea, the great maestro of Milan, Italy, Maurizio Pollini, passed away at his home in Milan, Italy, at the age of 82 in 2024 due to acute bronchitis and heart disease.
