Frédéric Chopin was born in 1810 in Żelazowa Wola, Poland. His father, Nicolas Chopin, was of French origin and worked as a teacher in Poland, while his mother, Justyna Krzyżanowska, was Polish. Chopin grew up in a household close to music and literature with his three sisters.
From an early age, he showed extraordinary talent for the piano. After his first lessons from his mother, he studied formally with piano teacher Wojciech Żywny starting in 1816. He developed his own musical sensibility while studying the music of Bach and Mozart. In 1817, he published his early work, a Polonaise, and in 1818, at the age of eight, he drew attention as a prodigy through a public performance.
Chopin continued his piano performance and composition studies in Warsaw. Later, he studied composition under Józef Elsner at the Warsaw Music Academy. Polish folk dances, such as the Mazurka and Polonaise, had a significant influence on his musical world.
In 1829, he visited Vienna and achieved success as a performer, and in 1830, he began to make a name for himself in the European music scene by releasing piano concertos and various other works.
In 1830, Chopin left Poland to expand his musical activities. That year, the November Uprising occurred in Warsaw, and the subsequent political situation of his homeland deeply influenced his life and music. Chopin arrived in Paris in 1831 and settled there.
In Paris, he interacted with contemporary musicians such as Franz Liszt, Felix Mendelssohn, and Hector Berlioz. He preferred performing in social gatherings and salons rather than large-scale public concerts, and he made a living through piano lessons and the publication of his works.
Chopin is a representative composer of the Romantic era who greatly expanded the expressive power of the piano. His music contains delicate melodies, rich harmonies, free rhythms, and the sentiment of Polish folk music.
His major works include the following:
Piano Sonata No. 3 in B minor, Op. 58
Ballade No. 1 in G minor, Op. 23
Ballade No. 4 in F minor, Op. 52
Nocturne in E-flat major, Op. 9, No. 2
Nocturne in C-sharp minor, Posthumous
Polonaise in A-flat major, Op. 53, 'Heroic Polonaise'
Polonaise in A-flat minor, Op. 26, No. 1
Etude Op. 10, No. 12, 'Revolutionary'
Etude Op. 25, No. 1, 'Aeolian Harp'
Fantaisie-Impromptu in C-sharp minor, Op. 66
Piano Concerto No. 1 in E minor, Op. 11
Piano Concerto No. 2 in F minor, Op. 21
Preludes, Op. 28
Chopin utilized the piano not merely as an instrument, but as a delicate voice expressing human emotions and the inner self.
In 1836, Chopin met the French novelist George Sand. The two maintained a romantic relationship from 1838. They stayed on the island of Mallorca in Spain during the winter of that year, and later spent several summers at Sand's estate in Nohant, France, continuing his compositional activities.
During this period, Chopin composed many important works such as ballads, polonaises, sonatas, and waltzes. However, their relationship gradually deteriorated, and they parted ways in 1847.
Chopin suffered from health problems for a long time. He visited England and Scotland in 1848 for performing activities, but his health gradually worsened. He gave his last public performance in London on November 16, 1848.
After returning to Paris, Chopin was cared for by his family and close acquaintances. His sister Ludwika stayed by his side during his final days.
Chopin passed away in Paris on October 17, 1849, at the age of 39. Mozart's Requiem was played at his funeral, and he was buried in Père Lachaise Cemetery in Paris. According to his will, his heart was moved to Poland and is kept in the Holy Cross Church in Warsaw.
Prologue

Late 1830s, Paris, France. The evening sunlight enters a quiet salon through high windows. A piano of that era is placed in the middle of the room, and sheet music and candles are neatly arranged on a table.
Frédéric Chopin is sitting in front of the piano. He has just finished playing a Nocturne melody and is organizing his sheet music. Even after the last note fades, a lyrical and dreamy lingering feeling remains in the room.
